reader response 2: Huck Finn (7-13)

reader response 2: Huck Finn (7-13)

In the adventures of Huck Finn, Huck Finn is influenced by many people. Tom sawyer is a big influence on Huck because that’s one of his friends; he’s somebody he looks up to. In chapter two, Huck, tom and some of their other friends decide to start a band of robbers.

Another person that affects him is the widow Douglas; she has the best influence on Huck because she teaches him to dress appropriate and to go to school and church. In chapter 1 page 2 paragraph 3 Huck complains about how the widow nags at him. She says things like “don’t put your feet up there huckleberry” and “don’t scrunch up like that huckleberry”

Pap has the worst influence on Huck because he teaches him the exact opposite of the widow. In chapter 5 page 14 when Huck’s dad comes back he says “you’ve put on considerable many frills since I been away. Ill takes you down a peg before I get done with you. You’re educated; too, they say; can read and write. You think you’re better’n your father now don’t you, because he can’t? Ill takes it out of you, who told you you might meddle with such hifault’n foolishness, hey? - Who told you? Then Huck responds “the widow. She told me.” This shows that his dad is telling him dressing nice and going to school is bad.

Jim also has an influence on Huck, you can tell because in chapter 9 page 37 huck says “Jim, this is nice, I wouldn’t wanna be anywhere but here” and Jim responds “ well, you wouldn’t a Ben here, ‘f it hadn’t a ben for Jim. Youd a ben down dah in de woods widout any dinner, en gittin’ moss’ drowned, too, dat you would honey.”

Racism

"oh, yes, this is a wonderful govment, wonderful. why, looky here. there was a free ______ there from ohio; a mutaltter, most as white as a white man. He had the most whitest shirt on you ever se, too, and the shiniest hat; and there aint a man in that town thats got as fine clothes as what he had; and he had a gold watch and chain, and a silver-headed cane- the awfulest old gray-headed nabob in the state. and what so you think? they said hes a p'fesser in a college. and could talk all kinds of languages, and knowed everything. and that aint the wust of it, they said he could vote, when he was at home. well, that let me out, thinks i. what is this country a- commin to? it was 'lection day, and i was just about to go and vote myself, if i warn' to drunk to get there; but when they told me there was a state in this country where they'd let that ______ vote, i drawed out. i says ill never vote again. thems the very words i said; they all heard me ; and the country may rot for all of me- ill never vote again as long as i live. and to see the cool way of that ______- why, he wouldnt five me the road if i hadn't shoved him out o' the way. says i to the people, why aint this ______ put up at auction and sold?" (pg. 20 chapter 6 2nd full paragraph) basicly what pap is saying is that _______ dont deserve the right to vote and that he is a supporter of slavery. also hes saying that they should be mindfull and get out of the way of white people.

I think that the way pap thinks is wrong because i belive that all people should be treated equaly nomatter what race gender or size. its a racist quote becausehe uses the "n word" freely and hes talking about them in a racist point of view.this relates to my life because even still there are people that are racist and sadly, im related to one of them.

this theme relates to mark twain and his life because he was alive during a very racist time. because of this he probably heard people around him all the time with a racist point of view. i dont think that mark twain himself was a racist and being that he wrote in satire he probably thought that this quote was wrong.
